I know they have gotten popular in the last couple of years but I’ve been wearing Birkenstocks forever. For the last ten years or so, I have bought a pair every single summer. I have a big collection! I love them all and I wear them constantly. It’s hard to wear a pair of Birks out but I’ve certainly put a lot of mileage on mine and some of them are showing it. Still comfy but in need of a refresh.
I decided to refinish a few of the most worn out ones, did some research and made a plan. Four pairs, four ways to refinish them… My first refresh project was super simple. I used spray paint to transform these Birkenstock Floridas into a pair of rose gold painted Birkenstock sandals. They came out even better than I imagined they would. You’d never guess they were painted!
The original patterned pair was won at a school auction about 8 years ago. It wasn’t my first choice of colors but I wore them plenty nonetheless. I decided it was time for a big change. Here’s how I transformed this stripy old pair of Birks to a lovely refreshed rose gold. Scroll down for the steps.
Supplies:
Sandals for refinishing
Wipes or other gentle cleaning materials
Premium spray paint
Toothpicks (for clearing paint from holes)
Mod Podge
Paintbrush
Painters Tape
Drop cloth
Step 1: Clean the Birkenstocks with a soft cloth and mild cleanser. I used baby wipes.
Step 2: Protect the areas you don’t want to paint with painter’s tape. Make sure to cover the sides and soles and undersides of the straps.
Step 3: Spray the shoes. It’s best to do VERY light coats and lots and lots of them. Don’t rush. The paint dries very fast so you can switch between shoes and do several coats in one sitting.
Step 4: After the shoes are thoroughly dried (I waited overnight) paint on a coat of mod podge or other sealer. Let this dry overnight and you are good to go!
I really love how these came out. Now I cannot wait to transform the other three pairs. Here’s a link to my DIY Glitter Birkenstocks Tutorial. Stayed tuned for more!

I know I’m late to the party on this, but I love your rose gold birks! What kind of spray paint did you use?
