We love our beaches here in So. Cal! But we are a fair family. Along with this love comes a serious respect for the sun, and dedication to skin protection.
My kids go to summer camp on an island. They are in and out of the water all day long. We don’t joke about solar safety. We swear by our chemical free sunscreen.
Half of our family members (the ones that need sunscreen the most!) tend to have reactions to chemical based sunscreens. It used to just be me. Certain sunscreens that contained the most common wide spectrum chemical sunscreen ingredients, would cause me to to burn almost as badly as if I was wearing nothing. It was an allergic reaction and a chemical “burn”. I started reading labels religiously and only buying sunscreens with natural, mineral based ingredients.

This past summer my younger daughter developed the same reaction to several chemical sunscreens. Much to her dismay. There’s nothing teenagers like less (except perhaps being burned) than showing up at the beach all white and streaky.
If you’ve tried mineral based sunscreen you know that they can be gloopy and unpleasant to apply. I hunt high and low for the ones that go on easy and work!
Here’s my faves for this summer, that I am packing in camp and beach bags:

And for sanity saving and protection without the constant whole body lotion re-application, particularly when my kids will be in the water all day long, I love rashguards and gear from Coolibar. My son is in love with this reversible 2 in 1 Coolibar rashguard that protects his fair redhead skin. All of this company’s products are impeccably well made. They even have great stuff for me.

Thanks to Coolibar for providing a sample rashguard in consideration of review. All opinions are my own.
