Family travel demands hearty breakfasts, and what better place to fuel up for a day of adventure, than the Waypoint Cafe at the Camarillo Airport.
Whether you are just passing thru Ventura county, on your way up the coast, shopping at the Camarillo outlets or staying longer to see the Sea Bees and Woolworth’s museum and shop Oxnard’s farmer’s market, I have an excellent, family friendly recommendation for a memorable breakfast.
The Waypoint Cafe enjoys a front row seat at this small airport, and diners outside on the terrace can watch small planes coming and going. Not that I know anything about planes. I’m a complete noob. But when I see them all lined up in front of their hangers, my heart gets a little extra beat-y and my imagination kicks into high gear.
Camarillo airport is a tiny airport, occupying what was once the Oxnard Air Force base. Now it is home to over 600 aircraft. You can take flight lessons here, or if like me you’d rather watch from the ground, you can just visit and eat breakfast next door at the Waypoint Cafe. The airport hosts between 150,000 and 200,000 take offs and landings each year so odds are you will see some action during your breakfast.
As well as providing front row seating with a view of the runway, the Waypoint Cafe hosts a play area for frisky little kids – complete with its own runway. So if you’d like to linger over a cup of coffee while your kids exercise high spirits, you are in luck.
The menu here is excellent, classic breakfast fare. This cafe doesn’t get by on looks (at planes) alone. The giant cinnamon rolls are famous and a good idea to split amongst multiple family members as they are over six inches wide and drizzled with warm glaze. Decadent!
I ordered an omelette and fries for my brunch. There are not specific gluten free options on this menu – if you are gluten free and want toast or a muffin ( trust me, you will after smelling the cinnamon rolls) plan to bring along your own to supplement.
We’ll be back to entertain our wanderlust and feed our crew!
Thanks to Ventura County Coast for hosting me at this restaurant.
