Ravensburger has come out with a Smartscope microscope that works viaan app to make it fun and easy for your little scientist to check out stuff using their smartphone AS a microscope.
It’s pretty cool. You set your phone on the lit platform and can see stuff at a pretty exciting level of magnification.
We put our test unit through the paces, looking at onion skin and dollar bills. The kit comes with slides and equipment to put together an assortment of fun things to look at – just by collecting items from your own back yard. We can’t wait to look at dead bugs and an assortment of leaves.
My older son recently joined a nature club and has been studying local flora and fauna, so he found the smartscope particularly exciting. We also liked looking at common objects like this dollar bill. One of the best things about the inclusion of the cell phone screen is the ability to save images in the camera roll and the ability to do this activity with friends, unlike a traditional microscope that limits viewing to one person at a time.
This item would make a welcome birthday gift for science inclined kids. It’s fun for parents too!
