We all have our go-to stores. For me, it’s simple. I prescribe:
- Home Goods when my kids have driven me over the edge and I feel a need to reclaim my space.
- The Container Store when I feel frazzled and out of control at work (don’t judge me!)
- Chanel counter at Nordstrom when life has thrown me a major curveball (red Chanel lipstick for courage, trust me)
- Stein Mart when I need a wardrobe confidence infusion for a special occasion.
I get by with a lot of simple basics. A plain white tee, black leggings, a simple black dress. These can be from Target or Kohls, or anywhere. They are a backdrop for the rest of my outfit. They are not what I stake my style on, though. They are not my signature pieces.
I’m looking for a little more from a signature piece. Designer quality, style and tailoring. Probably a name brand.
I’ve tried shopping at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack and to be sure I have found some great things at all of those stores. But when my plane is leaving in the morning and I have a half hour to shop and I have to find something fabulous, I go to Stein Mart. They always deliver, without requiring me to dig, hunt and troll the dressing room cast off rack for the deal.
Stein Mart has a great regularly refreshed selection of designer items in their boutique that are on trend, current and in perfect un-picked-over condition.
My go to items:
- Scarves
- Jewelry
- Sunglasses
- A quality (designer) top or jacket that layers over my own base pieces
- A great, well tailored dress that truly fits me.
I was (feeling confident about) wearing a nice dress from Stein Mart when I took this photo with Nate Berkus. Thank goodness. Who wants to look schleppy standing next to a style icon?

I’ve worn clothing from Stein Mart for TV appearances, on panels and to almost every event I’ve ever hosted.
You know who made me shop there? My mom. She’s an even bigger fan than me and a serious clothing snob to boot. Every time I have an event to shop for she asks “Have you been to Stein Mart?” My mother, I have found, is usually right.
I’m writing about all this today because I was treated to a sneak peek at a new Stein Mart store opening in the Irvine Marketplace on Tuesday. This new store had a fabulous home decor section to boot. I wanted to redecorate my entire home around these Trina Turk pillows. I’m not kidding. They are OJ for the eyeballs.
The aisles were packed with brightly colored clothes. Orange , or I should say “Tangerine Tango”, is truly the color of the year.
If you have a Stein Mart near you, you might want to check them out.
Disclosure: I was invited to a private sneak peek of the grand opening which included a goodie bag and a gift card. I spent three times the amount on the card and I’m going back. I still get compliments on that dress I wore to the Nate Berkus party.
