Carnivorous Plants for Kids Are Fun

We were recently shopping at a local organic supermarket and my 3yo found this beastly plant that he wanted to get for his big brother. He was so in love with that plant. It was like he’d struck gold.

Venus Flytrap. Feed me Seymour!

And then the questions followed…

Mommy? Where is the flytrap’s tummy? How can it eat without a tummy? Mommy? What kind of bugs does the flytrap like best? How big of a bug can it eat? What happened to the bug if the flytrap eats it but it has no tummy? Where does it go? Does the flytry poop?

Oh yeah.

Despite the interrogation that awaits parents, several people have asked me where I got this plant. If you’re not local I can’t really help you other than to say that Think Geek has a nifty looking Carnivorous Plant terrarium for sale.

Hasta la vista fruitflies.

I used to raise carnivorous plants as a kid; make sure to use only rainwater to water them and do NOT feed them hamburger – too much protein, it will make the traps turn black.

I used to collect buggies with honey outside to feed my plants….
