Laundry Room Makeover!

I’m going to have to bite down on a big  bullet before I publish these laundry room “before” pictures. Because it’s bad. Read bad. How bad? We used to keep a litter box beneath the utility sink, so we removed the doors. The room is so tiny that it’s hard to photograph. Just about 7×8 ft. I’ve never put much work (other than washing clothes) into this room. This is evidenced by the shower curtain rod over the sink (where I hang clothes to dry).

This room is so crowded and such a mess. There’s really no place for laundry sorting or folding so why do I keep trying to keep a basket on the floor in there? There’s just space for the washer and dryer and a utility sink. Fortunately there are cabinets overhead. Ugly white melamine ones. This poor room needs some relief. And so did my washer and dryer. My old front loader units are about 9 yrs old, and still going strong, but starting to feel the stress of near constant use. We bought high end Kenmore Elite Washer & Dryer units before we moved into this house 8 years ago and I have never regretted the purchase. The old washer & dryer has cleaned everything from cloth diapers (on Sani Cycle) to delicate silk dresses, faithfully.

There have been a couple of repairs but nothing out of the ordinary. The baby sock stuck in the drainage. The broken latch on the door from that time I slammed it a little too zealously.

My washer and dryer are still working fine but… it was just… time. When I broke the latch, the repairman told me the pump probably only had a yr or so left on it, with our present level of use. Speaking of which… here is a week of laundry in my house. 16-20 loads!!! I really need a faster, better way to get it all done!

We’re pretty brand loyal. Having loved our last Kenmore set, we happily headed to Sears to order up a new washer & dryer. Wow! So much has changed since I last shopped. I was marveling at the technology, the colors, the features, the choices. Honestly I was overwhelmed. I’m known to geek out over my laundry (I actually enjoy a good stain challenge and the satisfaction of making my clothes look new again). But I was feeling like I might have to go back to take a remedial Laundry 101 class before washing my clothes with a new machine.

I studied all of the models and decided on another Kenmore Elite set. Time to start painting and shopping for shelves.  If I was getting new units, I was going to finally fix that space up properly! New appliances, new look for the old pathetic laundry room. Stay tuned!  Which washer & dryer set did we pick? More on that later, but word on the street is that the new units are RED! See a sneak peek below.

Disclosure: Kenmore is supplying me with washer/dryer to review and to write about as I see fit. I am a long time Kenmore consumer and the opinions about appliances in all articles are exclusively my own.
