Community Garden Plot: Planted!

Our community has a novel use for an unused patch of land. It’s under the power towers (with a constant buzzing) and nobody wanted to put a park there, not even the dog owners.

So it became the community garden.

We’re on our third year of “farming” our plot and we’ve branched out. We share two land plats and two “stand up” raised planters with another family

The start of the season is the hardest. Weeding, building (or mending) containers for raised beds, prepping the soil… It’s not so fun.

But then you get to pick the plants. This may be my favorite part (or second only to enjoying our homegrown goodies).

I love the possibilities. I love the discussions about topics like whether we should grow some loofahs. Did you know loofah is a zucchini!?

We’ve got letttuce, fennel, herbs, multiple tomatoes and cucumbers, carrots, beans, eggplant, zucchini (not loofah), squash, peppers, onions, pumpkins and melons. I’m lobbying for a patch of cutting flowers.

We can’t wait to see what the earth gives us.

For now though, I’m just glad that we’re done with the prep work. Ready to grow.  Here’s a look back at how we did last year.

We are gardening for the first time this year, and I’m hooked already! What a great use of otherwise wasted soil.

Those green & yellow squash are huge! Looks awesome! We have a veggie garden – it gets bigger every year! But we love it and the kids are totally inspired eating stuff that comes out of our garden since they had a part in the planting and growing…

I didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I do but I really do love the gardening!

The work is just so worth it. We’ve got our red wagon out too, only lettuce, greens, herbs and radishes so far, but we’re psyched for some other stuff soon! Can’t wait for the tomatoes. Isn’t it just so great for the kids!?
