This year for our neighborhood Boo treat fest, I decided to do some Zombie themed care packages. Naturally I wanted to make some Zombie Brain Pops, but I wasn’t finding great instructions out there. I was at a bit of a loss until I spied these Brain Freeze ice cube molds at Home Goods.
Thanks to HomeGoods for the Boo package inspiration and the gift card to shop for Boo supplies, goodies and props. All opinions are my own.
I’m all for making brain shaped ice cubes but chocolate covered, cake ball and Rice Krispy Treat filled brain pops are much more fun and make a better gift.
Note: Similar silicon zombie brain molds to the one I used in this recipe are available at Amazon. This is not an affiliate link.
Here’s how we did it:
First we melted some melting chocolate in the microwave. We did two molds worth, half in neon green and half in a dull gray color that we created by mixing white, green, pink and purple.
We started by partially filling the molds and chilling.
Then we made a quick batch of Rice Krispy treats using the recipe on the box. We made some small balls that would fit nicely in the mold. This would work equally well with your favorite recipe for cake balls – I suggest you make them ahead and freeze the balls so they are ready to go. Make sure the balls are not too big, so you can pipe around them.
We placed the sticks into the balls, and then popped them into the mold and filled the rest of the way with chocolate. Placing the melted chocolate in a ziploc bag with the corner snipped made it easy to squirt in. We jiggled the sticks gently and tapped the mold to help the chocolate settle and distribute.
Then we popped the whole thing back into the fridge to set up.
Viola! BRAINZ!!!! Bonus points for the stick on googly eyes on the packaging.
