Did you think that this skirt was going to be all matchy? Tricked you! It’s a mismatched masterpiece. The daughter part of this combo is the outgrown tee that your daughter has just tossed in the donation pile. You will be recycling this into the handy dandy roll top waist of your skirt. No daughter? You’ll need a donor tee in a size (kids 4-10, can be a mother/son skirt too!) that fits snugly when stretched around your hips, or you can create a fabric tube from a second spare tee, but it will make your skirt take a little longer than 10 minutes.

For my skirt I used two Old Navy tees

1. A ribbed tank my daughters had outgrown. Ribbed fabric is excellent for waistbands!

2. An A-line tank that I purchased a few years ago when I was still a little postpartum. I no longer wear it because it makes me look and feel postpartum and I’m not! But it’s a fab print.

Step One: Cut off the daughter tee just below the armpit and just along the hemline (to create your raw edged tube). Fold over in half, wrong sides together.

Step Two: Cut off your mother tee, just below the armpits to create the body of the skirt.

Step Three: Place the mama tee tube (right side out) inside the daughter tee tube (so the right sides are together).  Line up the raw edges and join the two together using either a serger or a standard sewing maching with a zig zag/stretch stitch. The “waistband” you have created from the daughter tee will be smaller and will need to be stretched as you sew. To keep it evenly stretched as you go around, pin first at side seams and center front/back of each tube. Pinning (if you are impatient like me) is a pain in the butt but it is only four pins and will make your end result much nicer!
