Mickey Fantasia Party #Disneyside

My son loves Mickey Mouse and he loves cake.  He decided he wanted a Mickey Mouse Fantasia Party for his birthday this year. A good party often starts with a cake.

He wanted a Magical Rainbow Hidden Mickey Cake Perfect for a Mickey Mouse Fantasia Birthday Party… I was up for it.

But then my adorable Mickey mouse loving son decided he also wanted to have his party at “Laserquest.”  Uh oh.

I’m not a “party place” person. I know there are legions of people who adore those party places, which is evidenced by the fact that you have to book a slot three seasons in advance. Other moms have waxed poetic on the joys of how “easy” these sorts of parties are. “No cleanup, no cooking – just pick up some junk favors at the dollar store, a supermarket cake and have pizza delivered. Done!”

That’s not how I roll. It literally PAINS me to buy a cake. My parties have to have a theme and “birthday” alone doesn’t cut it. I like to decorate. I like to come up with ridiculous schemes. I like to party AT HOME.

But my son wanted to have his party at Laserquest and who am I to deny him (and his brother and his father) the joy of running around in a blacklit room shooting lasers at each other.  Looked like the show was going on the road, and our #Disneyside was about to meet the dark side. All I needed was theme. Too bad my kid isn’t into Star Wars.

My challenge was to finish this equation: Lasers/Glow + Mickey Mouse + #DisneySide = ___________________

MICKEY MOUSE FANTASIA PARTY!

I took to Pinterest for inspiration and created a Fantasia Mickey Party Pinterest Board. Then I contacted my friend Jon Layne of Partylayne. I consider myself pretty darn decent at parties and decor, but when it comes to this stuff, I am merely the sorcerer’s apprentice. One thing I was sure of – this party was going to be full of light and glowing stuff.

Jon helped me source and order some of these amazing party favors including the glowing swords with crystal disco balls at the ends. I loved how they lit up the entire room with dancing lights and the kids went nuts over them. They couldn’t believe they could take them home. Good thing we had enough for siblings too!

He suggested we put our son’s beloved vinylmation on display in clear acrylic cases lit up with “neon” glowsticks.

Jon found LED finger lights (perfect for magic making). The displays look a little like Mickey hands and all the kids went nuts over this inexpensive party favor.

Jon also cleverly advised me to serve the sorcerer’s broom snacks I’d prepared, on a dustpan. It’s a little hard to see in this shot, but the platter itself is a dustpan.

We incorporated Mickey’s gloves into the decor – and of course a pair of ears. It gave the party table a distinctive “Mickey was here” feel. The kids loved taking turns trying on the magicians gloves.

For treats (and additional favors) I served rainbow Mickey Rice Krispy Treats.

But of course, it all came back to the cake. My final trick of the Mickey Mouse Fantasia Party was the Surprise INSIDE the cake.

(Honestly I wasn’t sure if it was going to work. I baked two cakes so I could try one  beforehand and be sure.)

Hidden Mickey Cake

It worked! A cake win for an awesome party that I’m hoping my son will remember for years to come.

I couldn’t resist styling some of the stuff at home, before hitting the road and setting it all up again, QUICKLY, at the party place for our alotted 45 minutes of party room time.

As I was passing out the cake I overheard my son reverently telling his friends how his mom MADE EVERYTHING special for him.

My heart completely melted and I forgave him for dragging me to the party place.

Leo can have whatever kind of cake he wants next year but…. at home please!

Where did you find the disco ball laser swords?!!!!!! My daughter is in love with sorcerer mickey since recently visiting Fantasmic Show at Hollywood Studios at WDW. Love this post. This will be her 3rd Mickey/ Minnie party. We do it home made and at home too 🙂
