I’d almost forgotten about my plans to create a Lego minifigure lamp. I was inspired quite a while ago when I was at Legoland San Diego and had the chance to tour the set from the Lego movie.
There was a DIY LEGO lamp on the set that had been crusted with Lego Bricks and I knew then and there that this was going to happen in my house.
I even had the foresight to purchase this inexpensive Ikea Magnarp Lamp to use as the base of the hack/DIY. It’s been sitting forgotten in the playroom for a year.
My son has been under the weather for the past month or so, which has me dusting off those family style DIY projects for long days at home where everyone is “bored” and grumpy. My kids also have a LOT of LEGO.Mostly broken up sets that have already been built and disassembled with not a prayer of every finding all the pieces again. The mess looks something like this.
If you look closely you can see the dead batteries, pieces of random transformers, and possibly a dirty sock mixed in. Don’t judge me. These things happen.
First we sorted out all our bricks, finding the larger ones most suitable for building over the lamp frame. It takes a lot of bricks and we had to mix in some smaller ones too.
That’s how we got the idea of creating perches for all our minifigures, and also spaces for buttons, wheels, and decoration. Of course, as we built upwards, it made perfect sense to add a few secret doors and cabinets too.
We kept it simple with the lampshade – just hot gluing minifigs all around the bottom edge. Took less than ten minutes to do this step!
This DIY Lego Minifigure Lamp is meant to be a work in progress. We are not gluing the base as half the fun is switching out the characters, adding new guys and swapping accessories. The ensemble conveniently spins freely for easy access, and is super sturdy as is.
