Thanks to HomeGoods for sponsoring this post and inspiring me to make my “closet boutique” dream come true.

My dream closet is a lavish boutique. When shopping for items for a HomeGoods ClosetMakeover – this is my inspiration. What better place to shop than your own closet?
When I was in college, I earned travel money with a jewelry business. I roamed the world with my earnings, collecting baubles and beads for later crafting as I went.
I no longer sell jewelry but I still collect bits and pieces. Beautiful, sentimental items that rarely see the light of day. Though my days of Greek Island hopping in a bikini, velvet covered jewelry board on my back are behind me, I still get a thrill from “merchandising” my collection.
When I walk into my closet I want to feel like I am walking into a posh shop, made just for me. I want to shop for my accessories, every day.
HomeGoods challenged me to re-organize an area of my home and I jumped at the chance to organize my closet with a HomeGoods Closet Makeover.
I knew what area I would attack first. What I had going on in my closet was a bit of a mess. The bulletin boards were not working. The jewelry holder seemed wrong for all my jewelry and my bangles were bungled. BEFORE pic below via Instagram:
This project required literally thinking outside the (jewelry) box.
Some of my favorite creative jewelry display ideas:
- Earrings hanging on large spools of yarn
- Earrings on vintage wire cooling racks
- Bracelets draped on bleached branches
- Bracelets on vintage bottles
- Bangles stacked on candlesticks
- Necklaces displayed on collections of busts
- Rings on vintage wooden and ceramic hands
- Pretty plates and bowls for frequent use items
All of these ideas were swirling in my head but I needed a jumping off point. My inspiration pieces were two antique rolling pins from my own collection, one wood and one marble – handles removed. I tried stacking my bracelets on them and loved the effect.

At HomeGoods I found three more wooden rolling pins (16.99 & 5.99 each) for bracelet and necklace display. I hung the smaller ones from S hooks, kind of like a curtain rod. It’s easy to take them down and put them back up.

For my “big ticket item” I chose a beautiful fabric framed mirror by Cynthia Rowley ($79.99), because it reminds me of all my travels. So many of my favorite little things were discovered in far flung locations.
The ledge ($19.99) is a perfect perch for these little jewelry catchall bowls ($5.99 each). They keep good company with a bowl that my friend Angela just brought back from Loreto for me. Also on the ledge, a wooden sailor doll was my mother’s as a child. She has been with me since I was a child. Fly away, sail away. Dream a little dream…

Some blue glass bottles and a vintage crystal decanter keep my charm bracelets tidy.

I already had my eye on this cabinet (29.99) with the numbers on it. I’d thought about drilling holes in the back to create a multi phone charging station. Then I set a pair of my sunglasses in one of the cubbies and realized the cabinet’s true destiny.

Earrings can be tricky to display. This metal bird cage ($24.99) was actually in the home office area. It’s supposed to be a note center. The birds are magnetic, which is perfect for hanging a few more necklaces.
Two more items that were proper jewelry storage pieces finished the scene. The mannequin ( $24.99, pictured above) was perfect for my many homemade beaded bracelets. I cannot ever seem to walk out of a bead store empty handed.
The white piece, something I purchased months ago at HomeGoods, works perfectly as “key tree”, holding my many keyrings.

I’m very much in love with my personal boutique. It makes me happy every time I walk into my closet, to see all my favorite things on display. It’s a very personal display, curated bits and pieces of my life and things I love, things I’ve discovered along the way.
What I love about HomeGoods is the adventure. Much like travel, you never know what amazing things you will find, and how it will complete you.
Just a little creativity goes a long long way at HomeGoods. There’s always so much to work with. It’s such a wonderful feeling to find that last missing piece – that one item that allows you to bring collections out of hiding and put the finishing touches on your dream room.
Even my cat loves it.

You have completely inspired me to organize my jewelry AND I also want to organize our playroom / office / catch all room. Great ideas! Love the decanter idea. So gorgeous. Great job, Ciaran.
Oh, C, this looks so fabulous!!!! God, there are SO many areas in my house in need of a re-org,but I’d have to say priority #1 is the kitchen countertops. Grrrr.
OMG I freaking LOVE this. If anyone needs a closet makeover it’s me. I would be happy to share pictures of what I can only describe as a contender for the hoarding show on TLC. I don’t even know where to start!!!
Your pics are amazing!!!!
Ugh, your organizing is making me jealous. I have two walk in closets-one in front of the other, but even with all that room, my closet and jewelry collections are a mess. I try to organize, but it’s overwhelming. Purging is not in my nature. I think of my stuff as my hobby/my art. Pictures of my attempt at organizing in this album:
