This is a guest post by my friend Cheryl Jagoda who belongs to a moms group founded at her kid’s school – The Bay School in the San Francisco Bay Area. I saw her facebook post about her mom’s group sending college care packages and was so impressed, I asked her to share.
Gone are the days of playgroups, jumpy house birthday parties and required school auctions. Your first (or maybe your last) child has left the coop and has flown away to college, leaving behind a mom that feel an incredible void in the house. Of course there is also the constant list of questions;
“How are they doing?”
“What do they need?”
“Why don’t they call?!”
Our moms group is ever evolving in what we call ourselves, but you can’t call us alone!
We’ve made it a priority to get together. We have each other to laugh and even cry together. On a recent hike, Rebecca had a great idea;
“Let’s each bring something meaningful and add it to a collective college care package that we would send to the kids!”
Hundreds of group texts later, we bantered around all sorts of ideas for college care packages; from baking special treats, sending a little bit of home to sentimental items. Some of the items were determined practical, some we decided might be a tad bit inappropriate.
In the end we settled on just the right mix to create 10 large USPS express boxes and get the college care packages shipped out. They are currently enroute around the country to our college kids!
We took a photo with all of the dreaded “College Mom” shirts or hats collected from our kids alma maters too. We anticipate an eye-roll or two, but we still need to embarrass our children – isn’t that a right of passage as a parent?!
Before shipping we sent them an email telling them to look out for a special package that was created for them from “The Hiker Moms”.
The one thing that we hope they feel and understand is that this care package box is packed with the love of 10 moms. Moms who miss their kids, but have a great group of friends to support them day-in and day-out.
Here is our day at The Ark (post Hike and Lunch) and all the items that were placed in the box:
