As a member of the Brookstone Review Crew I got an early look at what is sure to be one of this season’s hottest tech toy gifts, The Rover.
Things you can do with the Rover and your ipad/iphone:
- Drive it around your house
- Shoot photo and video (even in the dark)
- Spy on your siblings
- Eavesdrop on your parents
- Scare the cat!
My kids had a blast testing this app driven toy around the house and parking it under the table to listen to adult discussions (hmmmmm….). It had a super quick learning curve – even my 8 year old was able to get the hang of it fast.
I was impressed by the night vision capability. It really did a great job of taking photos and shooting video in the dark. This plus the fact that it generates it’s own wifi signal to work with your i-device gives this gadget/toy a high neat-o factor. I’d expect nothing less from Brookstone.
The one feature that we would have liked to have seen is a “broadcast” feature. My kids felt it would be fun to drive the spy tank into another room, park it there, and then surprise unsuspecting spy subjects with a message. “Hey you! I see you there, picking your nose!” We’ve seen this broadcast feature available on lower tech, non app driven spy tank devices. But of course those devices do not work with your iPhone/iPad!
Despite the inability to make the tank talk, this is a toy that is a ton of fun and possibly very useful too. My teenage daughter is having a party soon. I will be relegated to the upstairs. With my iPhone.
I hope those kids don’t look under the coffee table….
