Has your family always dreamed of sleeping in a tent and going on Safari? You don’t have to travel halfway around the world to sleep under the stars and listen for lions. You can spend the weekend on Safari, at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park when you participate in a Roar and Snore Overnight.
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has been steadily adding new attractions, special events and safari tour options to their already exciting park. They are all amazing experiences.
Our favorite experience at the Zoo Safari Park remains the option to stay overnight in the park in one of the Roar and Snore tents
The Roar and Snore campouts run almost year round. They offer families and individuals the unique opportunity to spend the night “camped” out in a canvas tent within the park, within earshot of the lions and elephants.
Note: Lions are super loud! You should bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. The front desk can’t ask the wild animals to turn it down!
Tents vary from basic (foam pads in an empty structure) to luxury campsites (fully outfitted tents with a prime view of the elephants). All camp out participants are treated to a private tour, specially calibrated to meet the needs of the group and two meals (dinner and breakfast). In the evening you can enjoy a campfire and a view of the animal’s evening activities.
Parental Guidance: This park is a conservation & breeding facility — some of the animals tend to get “frisky” and if you bring young children, be prepared to distract them or have some interesting discussions.
Planning for your Roar and Snore Overnight Experience
You’ll probably want to stay and explore the park more the day before your campout or after on the following day. Some of the for-pay add ons include:
- a ropes course (best for older children)
- a zip line tour
- rolling & caravan safaris
- African Tram Safari
The San Diego Zoo Safari park never gets old as a destination for our children. There is always something new going on. Whether it’s a new baby animal being introduced, or a live demonstration of how fast a cheetah can run – it’s always a hit.
This is a park where you get to do more than just observe. Our kids truly love the opportunities offered to interact with the animals and see them up close. The staff at the San Diego Zoo Safari park are all so dedicated to teaching and sharing their knowledge, and are excellent teachers. They manage to get the kids excited about preservation. This makes learning about the animals and the park’s efforts fun and interesting. It’s just the right mix of conservation and theme park.
It’s also a breathtaking park. No visit would be complete without taking the time to admire the lush landscaping and unique native plantings within the park. Take a camera! You won’t want to miss the abundant photo ops!
