My 3yr old (almost 4) son is probably the biggest tech expert in the house. Which is amusing, given that he is the youngest.

He was practically born holding a cell phone. He’s able to log in to the mac with his own password, navigate to assorted sites and log in on them with username and passwords, as well. I have to change my apple password somewhat frequently to stop him from buying games on my phone and ipad.

It’s a little frightening, actually. He’s almost too savvy. Making sure he uses this power for good and not evil, is a chore.

My son loves stories and adventures and being read to. So I was curious to see what he would make of the V.Reader. Would it hold his interest?

He’s beginning to read words and short phrases all around him. The animated screen on the V. Reader is a big draw. Feels grown up and more like a video game, less like an educational toy.

We only tested the stories/activities that came with the V.Reader. Some of them were a hit, and others frustrated him (which is not a bad thing – he’s on the young end userwise). Fortunately he has a 7yo brother who was happy to take the V.Reader over and help with the test drive.

Both of the boys enjoyed the V. Reader enough that I purchased a couple of cartridges for the holidays. I’m going to download some books as well. I might also consider adding a power cord as the unit does eat through batteries with constant use.

Bottom line, it’s not going to replace their desire for iPods and DS’es but it is a perfect and entertaining electronic toy for a new reader. This will certainly come in handy on car trips, in waiting rooms and at restaurants and anywhere on the go that “quiet time” is the order of the day and mommy does not wish to surrender her iPhone.

My 3yr old gives the V-tech an enthusiastic speedy texting thumb up!
