It was 9 o’clock on a Saturday and I was on hold with the Cable Company. They didn’t understand what was at stake. I could not miss an episode or I might miss one of these Outlander inspired knitting projects.
“I need Starz and I need it NOW!” I explained. “There’s a new episode of Outlander and I cannot miss it!”
Now I know that a lot of people are watching the show because it’s epic, and has amazing production value. Basically it’s Scottish Game of Thrones for women. More romance, less nudity, and just enough gore and sex that your dude will want to watch it with ye.
You know all those nude women in Game of Thrones? Well we get a super hot dude in a kilt. Plus bagpipes. Which are a bit of a mood killer if you ask me. But the kilts are nice. In fact I’m loving all the costumes.
I’m into the story but I’m also in it for the period fashion (both the 40s and 1700s) and specifically, I am thrilled with the knitwear. Inspiration for miles!

I’m not sure if it’s entirely period authentic, but whatever team of rogue craftspeople the producers rounded up from Pinterest and Etsy… Well done!
I can’t get enough of the funky knits sported by Claire and the other women on this show. Winter is coming for reals on the Highland! I’m digging out my wooden needles and rough spun fisherman’s wool. Gauntlets, capes and cowls anyone?
Let’s just hope patterns for all this stuff all ends up on Ravelry before the next gathering.
Outlander inspired gauntlets (aka armwarmers)
Just about every female in the Highlands seems to have a pair of these handy knit gauntlets to keep her wrists warm. I like these thick ones that look like they are made of icelandic wool.
Claire’s gauntlets are a finer knit, and longer. I could see wearing a pair of these armwarmers all winter long.
Knit capelets are also now a thing, thanks To Outlander
Is it a shoulder warmer or a cape? It’s adorable! Just the thing to warm your bare shoulders and cover your cleavage without adding bulk!
Witchy wraps are also a warming trend
I’d like a better look at this cape with matching arm warmers. Cozy and witchy wonderful. So many ways to wear it.

Another look at the cape/wrap and Claire’s simple shrug. It seems to be made like a short scarf where the ends are folded and joined to form tubelike sleeves.
This cowl! I must have it. It was the first garment that got me hooked on the show. Who has a pattern for me? Outlander Knits look pretty Pinterest ready to me.

Hi there, I found you by googling “outlander knits” and I couldn’t agree more! Love the show and I’m pretty sure I need to make at least a cowl and shawlette based on things that Claire has worn! After all, Winter is coming, haha.
Please let me know if you find a pattern for the cowl! I find myself watching each week to see what new knits might show up.
