Did you know that October is Fair Trade Month?
I realize that this term has become a bit trendy. Sort of like “gluten free” and “eco”. It’s easy to dismiss this as buzz but Fair Trade is so much more than a food fad. It’s a movement that has the power to make the world a better place, a few folks at a time.
The biggest Fair Trade advocate in my house? My 12 year old daughter. Her advocacy has opened my eyes and brings home for me why it matters to shop Fair Trade. For her, for me, for our planet and all people.
Consider this: How many of the products that you purchase are touched by human hands, and crafted by artisans? Who are those artists? Who grows the crops and takes them to market? How are the products traded and the workers paid?
It’s certainly a lot to think/ worry about which is why fair trade certification matters. When you buy certified Fair Trade products you can shop in good conscience. The products you purchase are produced ethically, in an eco-friendly, sustainable fashion. The workers are treated and paid fairly.
Fair Trade particularly affects women and children, and therefore, families. Fair trade has allowed women to use their skills to support their families, in ways that were not possible in the past. It’s a global movement I’m proud to support all year round, and happy to promote in October.
Some (but not all) Fair Trade products are more expensive than mass produced items. The brands may be unfamiliar to you. But this month I’d like to ask you to give them a try. Shop consciously. Try replacing one or two items in your cart with a Fair Trade option.

Disclosure: FairTradeUSA shared a sampling of (some of my already favorite) Fair Trade products with me, in honor of Fair Trade month and in order to facilitate this post. My opinions and choice to advocate for this cause are my own, and this post has not been compensated.
