It is Saturday morning and I have drug my husband out of the house with little to no breakfast to attend The Baby Gear Show at Nordstrom, South Coast Plaza.
Walking up to the event, my husband says to me “I better not be the only guy here.” I laugh, thinking to myself it is quite possible that he will be the only one, but I respond with, “No honey, Jamie will be there!”
We walk in and meet Lindsay Pinchck, founder and CEO of the Bump Club and Beyond. Lindsay takes us up to the third floor of Nordstrom where the event was, the baby department of course.
We are scheduled interview the BabyGuy prior to the event.
Upon exiting the elevator and en route to interview Jamie, I thought to myself, “This guy is going to think I am totally behind the eight ball in my baby gear product knowledge! For goodness sakes, I only have 12 more weeks till our daughter arrives in this world and I know the bare minimum about baby gear. Then again, maybe that is a good thing? I’m coming in very aware yet open minded!”
Lindsay introduced my husband and me to Jamie. He had just snapped one last photo of the products that were to be discussed and raffled off. He grabbed his ice coffee and we sat in the front two rows and chatted.
I am not going to lie, I was shocked at how easy it was to talk to Jamie about products and his knowledge of gear is overwhelming yet refreshing! If you want the truth, a good laugh, and possibly cocktail suggestions, Jamie is your guy! Also, from my point of view, he loves what he does.
Without hesitation he answered all my questions from top baby monitors, strollers, to how he felt about cribs and organic products.
Also, after we chatted for twenty or so minutes he went on to speak to about 100 people about products that were at the event, of which were many of the products that he and I had just spoke about. Jamie was able to educated, made us laugh, made us think, and even had time for a Q&A session.
One of my favorite comic relief moments came when he explained car seats and car seat bases giving a whole spiel on them. He then paused and reminded everyone to read their owner’s manual, they are there for a reason.
Very true, and I am sure there are a lot of people that do not read them thinking they can resort to common sense. While common sense is great, the safety and wellbeing of your child is much more important than ones ego. I agree with Jamie, READ your manuals!
Jamie was asked about the length of time a child should be in their car seat. Jamie responded with about 2 hours. Then went on to add humor to the answer by saying if you are not feeding or changing your youngster every couple hours you will need to look into this thing called PARENTING.
Like I said, it was a light hearted and informative event with the Baby Gear Guy, Jamie Grayson, who was named in New York Magazine Best of Edition as the Best Baby Gear Guru of 2010.
Needless to say, I left the event feeling great about my registry (sigh of relief), and feeling thoroughly educated on products. There are hundreds and thousands of products and we obviously did not discuss them all yet the general understanding of this overwhelming new stage of life just seemed to get a little bit easier.
The event concluded with about $3,000 worth of gear raffled off. I was lucky enough to win the 4moms mamaroo! I quickly jumped on my registryand removed it!
Here are Jamie’s top suggestions from my interview with him
- A good car seat
- A good carrier
- A good bag!
- A SKIP HOP Pronto changing station (Jamie says, “It’s pretty damn important.)
- A good breast bump
BEST CAR SEAT BRANDS:
JOGGERS: (I am a runner so I had to ask)
- Baby Jogger Summit X3
- Mountain Buggy Terrain
- Bugaboo has a jogger but you can’t have the wheel swivel so it is annoying when you are just trying to walk with it.
Jamie said that Orbit called is coming out with a jogger that looks really really cool and the seat can turn around and face the parent. It also has two positions so when you are running you can set it a little lower to help the center of gravity.
Depends a lot on your body type although his picks are:
Best invention of 2015:
- EzPz Mat – a silicon feeding mat that has the bowl built in
Jamie says “It is genius!” The company will be launching a travel one that is thinner – to roll up and take with you.
Dishwasher safe, stackable and if you see Jamie with the round one, know that he might have used it to drink a margarita out of! Salt the rim, margarita in the bowl, and limes on the outside.
The one thing that parents do not get, but run to the store to get after their kid is born:
Sadly he said, they freak out over their car seat. Especially if they have a premature, or a surprise delivery. When Jamie was working retail people would run in to get a car seat. He would remind people to make sure they had the right inserts – especially for couples that were having multiples, making sure that it can accommodate low birth weight.
The one product that parents register for or get that they really do not need:
So dumb! If you use wipe warmers at home, and you go out they don’t have them, will your kid will lose their mind? No they won’t, so…wipe warmers are stupid.
Best gift to give if you are attending a baby shower:
