I jumped on the juice bus about a year ago. Long before I’d ever heard of Spud.com.  It makes perfect sense for me. I’m gluten free and sensitive to so many preservatives and additives. I worry about what nutrients I’m getting from my diet. Often I don’t eat for fear of making myself sick, or I eat the same foods over and over for fear of having a reaction to something new.

I wanted to feel better and I’d heard such great things from all my friends who juice. They were “addicted”.

That’s the word that juicers use to describe their passion for fresh healthy juice. Addicted.  That and “converted”.

Powerful stuff. When people use language like that I know there’s something major going on. So I did the sensible thing. I rushed right out to the nearest Bed Bath and Beyond, coupon in hand and purchased the best juicer I could barely afford. It was pretty well rated and when I got it home and tried it out, I was happy with the performance, if not overjoyed about the laborious cleaning of my new toy.

I juiced. A lot. I came up with my own concoctions. I called my signature green blend “Zombie Swamp” because it had the power to lift me from (feeling like) the dead. I swore that ginger had more effect on my mystery inflammation than any meds I’d ever taken.

But then I sort of fell out of it. I got lazy about shopping for organic produce because there were no local markets where it was readily available. I didn’t have time to run to Whole Foods most days and when I tried to juice using non organic produce I was sorely disappointed by the flavor of the juice. Yes. There really was a difference. Things tasted bitter, watery, wrong. So I was discouraged and I was tired of scrubbing and scrubbing and scrubbing my juicer. It sat unused on the counter waiting for the bright sunny Saturday morning where I’d spring up out of bed and rush off to the Farmer’s Market to buy fresh organic produce to juice. Funny/ironic thing about that. I might be more likely to bound out if I *already HAD* the juce.

I was excited to try out a juicing box from SPUD.com (Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery) for two reasons.

  1. Their juicer (Hurom) was reportedly easier to use than the one I had and yielded better results, and
  2. I didn’t have to find the time to hunt for the fresh ingredients for the juice I wanted to make.

I didn’t have to really even think or plan. SPUD does that for you. Their produce boxes come with all the right ingredients and recipes. They’ll even send you the juicer. So I placed my order for the Hurom and the Dynamic Beauty Juicing Box. Both were delivered to my doorstep (actually to my courtyard – their driver followed my special instructions) and all arrived fresh and perfect and ready to use.

My husband is actually even more into juicing than me. There’s something so satisfying about popping the fruits and veggies in and getting something so *good* out of the machine. Like magic. We were excited to try out the Hurom juicer in particular as it uses a different method to extract juice than our other juicer. Yes we got all technical with our research. Dadfluential likes power tools and juicers are powerful machines after all!

The first batch of juice we made was this Raw Glow Juice:

Raw Glow Juice

  • 1 handful Spinach
  • 1 Apple
  • 1 bunch Mint
  • 1/2 Lemon
  • 1/4 Cucumber

(and because I could not resist, I added  1 chunk of ginger)

Wow. WOW!

It was potent, fresh, delicious and some of the best juice I’ve ever had.  Why was it so much better than the juice I’d made with my other juicer? I’m not even sure. I’ll have to try the same recipe with both juicers at the same time, with the same  SPUD produce to properly find the answer. I’ll tell you this though… I wanted more immediately. In fact I want some right now, while typing this. Just thinking about.

Uh oh. I might be addicted.

We went on to make some more juice using this recipe, using this ABC Recipe (Apple, Beets & Carrot) and spinach

ABC Juice

  • 1 apple
  • 2 beets
  • 3 large carrots
  • 1 (1-inch) piece of ginger
  • Spinach (optional), or
  • Kale (optional)

It was a gorgeous shade of hot pink that just begged you to drink it and stick out your tongue. Sort of like when you eat a blue popsicle but better for you. I’m not usually a fan of beet or carrot juice but this… not half bad! I wanted to pour the two juices into shot glasses and display them side by side as holiday decor. So pretty!

I’ll definitely be ordering from Spud.com again as this is a foolproof way for me to get exactly the right kinds of organic produce, in the right amounts to make juicing a part of my everyday life. If you are in the L.A./O.C. area – check them out!

Disclosure: This post has been sponsored by Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery, a company that sources local and fresh produce for delivery to your doorstep. While I was not compensated, I did receive product to try. All opinions are my own, as is my super secret blend for “Zombie Swamp” Juice.
