Yarn made out of strips of recycled silk chiffon? Yes please! I’d consider tearing up some of my own, but Lion Brand has made it a lot easier.
Fiber junkies will understand why I’ve been making so many infinity scarves/cowls this winter. There are so many great specialty yarns out there and these projects are fast (especially whey you use jumbo needles) and easy and great for gift giving. My friends are all getting knit bombed.
My favorite scarves are what I like to call “mixed media” scarves. I love to combine a bunch of different yarns and see what I get. It’s all about serendipity, stash busting and upcycling.
When I was browsing the Lion Brand catalog, I came across some silk chiffon ribbon yarn that intrigued me. I reached out to them and they agreed to send some for me to try.
It’s made from torn strips of Indian Sari silk, joined into one continuous strand. This silk ribbon yard is part of the LB collection, higher end yarns produced in smaller quantities. This one is done in such small batches that you cannot select a color – you get what you get. I actually love the surprise of this and the challenge it presents for one of my mixed media scarf projects. I was delighted when this teal, purple, blue and magenta toned skein arrived. I had some yarn languishing in my stash that was a perfect match.
These yarns knit up together so prettily. The scarf was done in just over an hour, in simple garter stitch on size 50 needles. I made it while watching tv and then wore it the very next day! These sort of projects are so satisfying and perfect for beginners. I have one more skein of Lion Brand Silk chiffon, in shades of cream and tan. I’m thinking of mixing with mohair. Can’t wait to show you the results of that one too.
