When my friend Joya posted one of her homemade calendars on instagram, I went completely gaga. My 18 month calendar just ran out in June and I’ve been scouring stores for something un-ugly to hang on the fridge. It had not occurred to me to make something so “commonplace” as a fridge calendar until I saw this. I now have nothing but pity for commonplace calendars!
I asked begged Joya to write a tutorial for me and because I like you and want your days to be rainbow colored as well, it would be cruel of me not to share.
For the record, Joya is one of the cleverest crafters I know. I’ve been following her gorgeous images for years – drooling over her kid’s birthday parties, her sewing projects, home decor and clever gifts. Thank goodness she’s just launched a blog because that much goodness should be shared. You’ll want to add Rajovilla to your reader and/or bookmark for more projects like this calendar.
This is a perfect summer activity and I think if I get started now, I can make enough pages to cover the whole school year. Here are Joya’s directions and photos:
1. Decide on the calendar layout. I decided to double up sat/sun on last circle spot.
2. Measure how many circles and what size would fit on your watercolor paper.
3. I used a small glass jar upside down to trace overlapping circles with a light pencil.
4. I chose 4 colors to repeat. And using a good watercolor brush, I filled in each circle.

5. let it dry completely. Then you can go back and erase any exposed pencil marks.

6. I used a black fine tip pen to add the detail of numbers. I filled in all of our upcoming commitments as a family.

7. I love a calendar on the fridge, so I added magnets to the back of plain clothespins, and clipped our watercolor calendar to the fridge. This makes it easy to take down, and add more activities.
