The series is called Juno Baby and I’m pretty sure your 1-5 yr old children will love Juno as much as Babyfluential and Boyfluential do. What makes Juno so endearing? Some of the animation and characters might look a little familiar to you if you are a child of the 70s and 80s, as the same puppeteers that created the characters on Sesame Street and the Muppets are behind the lovable Juno Baby cast. The characters of Juno and Rai Rai are named for the children of the creators and are very sweet, loveable and identifiable for kids aged 1-5. The tone of these dvds and cds is uplifting.

Here Come the Babies

I really cannot wait to see this film: Babies coming out on Mother’s Day. It’s been getting great buzz when screened in select cities in the US and I got to meet some of the people involved at a recent SVMoms event. The movie follows one year in the daily lives of four babies, in Namibia, Mongolia, San Francisco and Tokyo. It’s visually spectacular and simply spellbinding. Their tag line is that everyone loves babies. So true. Why is that?

Dakota Drops a Cherry Bomb

Ok, I know this is a movie, a role she is playing. This is not 16 year old Dakota Fanning’s new personal style statement. Dakota is way too sophisticated to go with this so obvious it’s almost boring lingerie as daywear, bleached hair, sharpie pen eyeliner, eff off cause I’m gonna do drugs and get laid now cause I CAN cause I am all grown up and I’ll effing cut you if you tell me to put on a sweater. Mom. [Insert massive eye roll and suicidal tendencies clip here]

RIP Youth.

I love Dakota Fanning. Like a young Jodi Foster. That kid can ACT. I just hate her in this role. Because all her little fans? They aren’t so subtle. They are going to imitate this angst ridden look, attitude etc They cannot help themselves. It’s the hormones. I’d wager that my 13 year old will probably try and wear a bustier to school at some point in the next six months because of this crap (then again now that I wrote that she will do something else just to prove a point that I’m not that all knowing, which we all know I am!). And here I was hoping for something more original than my own teenaged rebellion. Sigh.

Call me old (fashioned) but I’m sad to see Dakota’s youthful image slip away on screen and likely offscreen as well now. Couldn’t she have at least played some Jane Austen era nymphomaniac or something? That would have worked for me. There would be less eyeliner for me to wash off the pillowcases and less conditioner to buy for all that fried hair.

Pregnancy Pact Movie Stirs Controversy?

The Lifetime Movie The Pregnancy Pact stirred controversy and became a trending topic on both Google and Twitter (#pregnancypact) last night, resulting in numerous searches and tweets. The movie is fictional but the topic of the film is”ripped from the headlines”. You may remember hearing news stories last year, about a group of high school aged girls from a small town who allegedly made a pact to all get pregnant and raise their babies together.

I stayed up late to watch the midnight airing of the film, but failed to see the controversy. In the end the film raised the same questions, and issues about teen pregnancy that I have been hearing since I was a teen and heard whispers that “so and so” was rumored to be knocked up.

And yet, I’m planning to watch the film with my teen/tween daughters, and can’t wait to get their feedback. I’m generally hopeful that our open communication (not to mention the presence of their adorable but oft snot nosed baby brother and the daily diaper changes) provides some degree of reality check in their lives, but who knows? I welcome any chance for further discussion on this topic because I know that ultimately, communication is probably the most powerful tool anyone wields as a parent. Birth control, whether you are for or against teens having access to it, is secondary to information and support.

Ryan Reynolds Sundance Film Brings Fear To Surface

I always love to see the films coming out of the Sundance film festival, especially the ones that feature actors like Ryan Reynolds, whose career I’ve been following for years. In Buried, directed by Rodrigo Cortes, Reynolds plays a contract driver working in Iraq. He is taken hostage, held for ransom and buried alive with only his cell phone and a lighter. It’s a scenario that chills me to the bone. Maybe because I am so claustrophobic, maybe because he just seems too convincing. I’m not sure I’ll even be able to watch more than this trailer, but the film looks awesome and noteworthy. Not a lot of $ spent on that set!

There you have it – I am afraid of tight spaces. I am not however, afraid of Ryan Reynolds. What are you afraid of! Do your kids share your fears?

Watching New Moon with tweens & teens

We’re huge fans of the Twilight Series. Honestly, who can resist a sexy teenaged vampire like Edward Cullen? Not this mom or her young daughters. We’ve got front row seats on that bandwagon. We’ve been waiting anxiously for the second film in the series and it did not disappoint! We actually liked it a little better than the first. Not only was it a great film, with a lot of interesting and arty camera angles and action sequences, it was just thrilling & “adult” enough for my tween/teen to feel like they’d gotten away with something, without my feeling like they’d be scarred for life. Final tally between Team Edward vs Team Jacob? Watch the story to see!
