Posadas is the core tradition of my family’s fiesta Navideña. Our gathering is very special to us. We have a huge family and everyone gathers to participate in the holiday fun.
Las Posadas is celebrated for a total of nine days, concluding on Christmas Eve or “Nochebuena” which is the most celebrated. The reason why the celebration is observed for nine days, is to mark the length of Mary’s pregnancy – a day for each month.
Every family does something a little different to celebrate. The highlight of my family’s holiday is our special procession that takes place on Christmas Eve. I am grateful that my parents have brought this lovely tradition to our family from their pueblo in Tlaltenango Zacatecas.
We enjoy Mexican traditional food and drinks on Nochebuena and Northgate Markets is the go-to, one stop shop for our family celebration. Why cook it all from scratch, when you can count on the freshest ingredients and high quality food at Northgate Markets?
Thank you Gigasavvy for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own.
Our entire extended family looks forward to attending the “Saldaña-Camacho Posada.”
Christmas Eve always begins with a traditional Mexican dinner. The food is an extremely important part of our Posada – no detail can be left out!
Posole and tamales are staple dishes at our Posada feast. These foods are special to my family because they are my abuelita Maria’s recipes.
Our delicious treats also include:
- Rich and creamy champurrado – a unique kind of Mexican hot chocolate made with masa flour
- Tasty buñuelos ( )
- Aromatic ponche navideño, a Mexican fruit punch that’s served hot.
The smell of Las Posadas is the smell of home and of my mother’s kitchen: cinnamon, chocolate and heavenly spices, all mingling for the festivities during Navidad.
Want to try making your own champurrado & ponche navideño? Check out the video recipes below. You’ll find all the ingredients you need to make these soul-satisfying drinks at Northgate markets!
Pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) is another one of my favorite treats during the entire Posada season.
During my kid’s winter break, pop by my place and you will find conchas (the pan dulce pictured above) and a fresh pot of Chocolate Abuelita on my stove.
Buzzfeed sums up the way I feel about Chocolate Abuelita quite nicely. This amazing Mexican hot chocolate is like no other, and I am so glad that I can always easily find it at Northgate Markets.
In fact, I know I can find all of my favorite holiday season products including pan dulce, posole, and tamales at Northgate Markets.
No searching, no substitutes and in many cases, no slaving over a hot stove. Why stress when Northgate Markets makes it just as good as your Mom and Tias?
I like to save my energy for the special things I love to make. This way I can relax and enjoy the holiday without the mess or fuss.
Northgate Markets offers convenient catering options at all their stores.
The new super-sized Northgate Market on Lincoln Ave in Anaheim is my favorite to visit and shop at because they always have everything I am looking for and then some! I also frequently visit the Northgate Market on 17th St, in Santa Ana and the Northgate Market on N Harbor, Santa Ana.
Stressed is dessert spelled backwards…. Coincidence? I think not.
Northgate Markets makes my life so much easier but it wouldn’t be a family celebration without a little drama, would it?
The chaos has also become part of the annual tradition. Every year the kids fight over who will portray Mary, Joseph, and the Three kings in the Nativity reenactment. This has been happening ever since they were little.
Our musical procession begins at home and then we visit our neighbors, acting out the Nativity story of Mary and Joseph asking for shelter. The kids and adults sing “En nombre del cielo os pido posada.”
This procession is very special to me and I love that my children get to experience it. Although we live in the U.S., I want my kids, nieces, and nephews to continue this beautiful Mexican tradition. I want them to embrace and be proud of their rich culture.
Our family continues to grow and our Posada festivity gets bigger every year, but there’s always more room at our table and in our hearts. We are so grateful that Northgate Markets are a part of our lives, making our holidays even easier and better over time, and becoming part of our tradition.
¡Feliz Navidad! Con cariño- La Familia Saldaña y Camacho.
