As we pulled up, past the heliport and multiple fountains and into the circular drive of Hotel Grand Del Mar, I had a feeling I was being transported. Out of my ordinary life and into something that was a bit like the modern equivalent of a Merchant Ivory film.
The Grand Del Mar is the kind of hotel that pays attentions to details. Each and every one of them. No bar of facial soap, no serving dish, no carefully folded cocktail napkin is overlooked in their quest for hotel perfection. The exquisite tile and ironwork, the lush landscaping and the dramatic architechture throughout this lavish resort all conspire to transport you and your family to a place without time, without worry, and with perfect pampering. You want an escape? I’m pretty sure you can find it here.
One of the many benefits of living in Southern California is that we can get away without the inconvenience of flying (our family of six) halfway around the world. Travelling a great distance, in addition to being prohibitively expensive, is also a major time suck and stressor. Alloting two days for flying, time for recovery and all the stress of packing and planning for the journey, is enough for me to fantasize about a staycation. But no staycation could compare with the luxury that exists a mere hour away in Del Mar. And for the money we’d spend getting the crew to destination Y we can stay a few days longer at the Hotel Grand Del Mar. Now THAT is a vacation.
Highlights from our trip include:
- Family friendly suites with room to stretch out, books to read, kitchen
- Kid (and baby) friendly pools to lounge by
- Restaurants that make family dining a pleasure for all
- Croquet field
- Great coffee/ice cream shop etc on premises, no need to leave!
- Kid friendly activities – Nature hikes, kids camps, hot air balloons
- Close to beach , golf, Del Mar racetrack & theme parks
If you are interested in stepping outside of time for a family vacation that will rejuvenate one and all in your own tribe, check out some of the Grand Del Mar’s Summer specials. Families will want to check out the Family package that includes the kid’s camp program, 50% off a second (adjoining) room and “Kids Eat Free” when poolside dining or enjoying meals at the Amaya restaurant. Bon Voyage!
