Ground Control to Lincoln’s Ad Agency

I’m a fan of Lincolns. When I drove the 2010 MK I loved it. Probably because I am such a child of the 80s. It brings back memories for me of heading into the city in someone’s posh daddy’s car. Lap of luxury, cushioned, coddled, but powerful. All that stuff Lincoln probably wants most people to think about them. And then this. This commercial says to me “Double check that life insurance policy girl, cause once you get into your car, you’re checking out.”

Did it not occur to anyone at Lincoln’s ad agency that Major Tom bid adieu to his wife and kids? And floated off into space. Presumably to DIE?

Is it just me that doesn’t respond well to an ad for a car that brings to mind death?

Just checking.

I had not thought of this in context with the actual meaning of the song – just enjoyed the updated cover of it. But this reminds me of the inappropriateness of that cruise line that uses Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life” to illustrate family vacations – when that song celebrates drug use. People who weren’t around then don’t catch that meaning.

I’m guessing it is perhaps an age related thing. If you weren’t familiar with the song to begin with, perhaos it doesn’t strike you the same way.
