You Want to Call the Baby WHAT?

You know how impossible it is to get along with your parents when it comes to choosing baby names? It’s comical, laughable and now thanks to the geniuses over at BabyNameWizard it’s also predictable.

Imagine me, several months pregnant, getting a lecture on why I should give a name like “Bruce”  a chance. Followed by another lecture about how unthinkable  Hazel, Pearl and Ocean are. Now read this article on generational trends in baby naming over on baby name wizard and it will all make sense.

I’m sending this article to my mom. No more babies to name in my own family, but we can have a laugh.

My parents were really weird about the baby naming, and as I only had one shot at it, I needed to get it right! Thankful that minefield is over with.

Growing up I knew two sisters named April and Autumn, that naming trick worked for them. Having said that, I’m not a fan of themes for naming your child. Prior to our son being born I would jokingly tell folks that we were going to name him ‘Deisel’. Mercifully, my wife asked that I stop telling that (bad) joke.

I was very particular in the naming of my children, put a lot of thought in their names, and made it clear that their full first name would be what they should be called. My family and friends still insist on shortening each of their names to my dismay – Jessica is now Jessie, Angela is now Angie, and Christopher is now Chris. I think I may be odd in my particular leanings on this. I keep thinking if I wanted them to be called “Jessie, Angie, and Chris”, I would have named them that!
