It’s tough dressing my tween-aged and young teenaged daughters. I now long for the bygone days of twirly skirts and tights where the biggest argument was over the pink sparkly shoes or the princess rain boots. Look at this picture from a few years ago! I was blissfully unaware of the gold lame’ bikini, short shorts with Ugg boots, and teeny see through camis with bra straps showing troubles that awaited me. (Although, looking at the ‘tude I should have suspected what was in store for me!)
I only wish I’d discovered the Juvie Shop teen/tween clothing store before a few choice tearful school-morning arguments and meltdowns while shopping at the mall.
In case you have not noticed, teen/tween girls are being sent the message to dress sluttier skankier than ever. While it’s easy to blame mainstream media, the internet etc, I have to say it’s not all their fault. Part of the problem is the basic lack of quality, appropriate clothes that are cute and that fit well. Believe me, we’ve shopped everywhere from Target to Abercrombie, to Justice and Forever 21. There are cute kid clothes out there, and cute clothes for women, but very little in between. Even at our favorite stores like Nordstrom, my daughters exist in this no-girls zone between child and woman. They’re not interested in a big boxy Dora tee and they’re really not ready to flaunt the Real Housewives of the OC cleavage and ruching tanks. But given the choice between dressing like Dora and like a Real Housewife? Guess which one your average 13yo is going to choose?
Which is why I am so happy that The Juvie Shop exists and offers more choices. This store sells a carefully curated collection of hip, quality teen and tween clothing, that doesn’t make my hair stand on end, that meets school (and mom) dress codes for us, and that washes and wears well. We decided to challenge Juvie Shop owner Kristen Taylor with putting together a few outfits for spring (school, hanging with friends, pool, beach and family parties) and this video is what resulted. We had so much fun filming it!
Ready to shop? Juvie has a sale going on right now. Use code Spring20 for 20% off all merchandise now through Sunday 4/4/10
Does your school have a dress code? Do you have one for your teen/tween? Tell us what it is! What is your biggest challenge when dressing your teen/tween daughters?
Disclosure: Juvie Shop provided sample clothing for the filming of this video. We ended up buying some of them, and sent back some. Momfluential Media was not compensated for this video.
