Superbowl Ads: Were we all Pants-ed?

I was a little underwhelmed with the ads aired during the Superbowl this year. Predictable, pat, and in some cases, depressing. Sure there were free pants from Dockers that caused an internet search frenzy. But was there content? Were there sales? Aside from Dockers blip on the Google-dar – do you think any of the ads will live on as legend?
I’m thinking no, because so many of the ads were divisive free of the humor and “universal truths” that elevate ads to entertainment. Nothing stood out as a potential new classic. Anger replaced humor this year, and that’s a tougher row to hoe – unless you have a preposterous little old lady to make us laugh while she demands “Where’s the Beef?!”
I had a beef this year; a beef with the negative tone.
Natalie from The Bobby Pin called out the above ad as an attack. It’s not just an attack against women alone and their emasculating ways, it’s an against (happy) relationships, she posits. My reaction to the ad was more along the lines of “DAMN. That is SO depressing.” But I think Natalie nailed in in her analysis. I watched this ad along with several men in the room, who snorted at it, but didn’t find it exactly funny. A recently divorced dude in our party rolled his eyes. General opinion was that it takes way more than a Dodge vehicle to make up for that much personal misery and the ad was… angry. Puerile. And ridiculous. Ten minutes later noone could remember what it was an ad for.
I’m sad as I’d hoped to see more clever and funny ads this year. Sure sex and sexism too (apparently) sells, but don’t women watch the super bowl too? Don’t we shop? Hello? Did I miss something? Please link me if there’s a good or funny ad I might have missed. I’d love to see it!
Also be sure to click through to Natalie’s blog post as she has an awesome Superbowl Ad Chart.
